The Kearney High wrestling team finished second at the 60th annual Rocky Welton Invitational hosted in Garden City, Kansas. The Bearcats led for the majority of the second day, only to be surpassed by Goodard, Kansas by a final score of 226 to 221. This tournament featured 37 teams from 4 different states.
The Bearcats battled through some tough teams in the 16 team field Saturday. The Bearcats started the day off against Columbus Scotus which the Bearcats defeated Scotus 52-21. In the second round, Kearney defeated Thayer Central 66-18. Round three resulted in the Bearcats losing to Alliance 42-21.
The JV Bearcats Gold and Blue teams place first and fifth and medal 13 wrestlers. The Gold team finished first with 258.5 team points in the 16 team field while the Blue team finished 5th with 105 team points.
Kearney High placed all but one of their wrestlers in the top 3 of the Gator Invitational, including 6 individual champions. The Bearcats put 10 wrestlers into the finals to finish with 263 points, well ahead of second place Fremont who finished with 147.
The Bearcats finish second just behind defending state champions of Burwell.
The JV Bearcats came back from the Christmas break with a short turnaround to travel up the road to the Pleasanton Kurt Keaschall Invite this past Saturday. The Bearcats performed well placing 21 Bearcats on the awards podium with four individual champions and three runner-up placers.
