Lee Herrington claimed and individual heavyweight championship at the Rocky Welton Invitational to help lead Kearney High School to its highest finish in recent years. The Bearcats finished second out of 31 teams, only 8 points behind nationally ranked Pomona High School out of Colorado.
The JV Bearcats attended the Aurora Duals this past weekend for the first time. The Bearcats went in ranked at the number four seed in the eight team field including the number one team in class A, Millard South. The Bearcats went 2-2 for the day finishing in 5th place. The JV reserves for the Bearcats also competed in between dual rounds as well with several Bearcats going undefeated for the day.
Columbus High School wrestling celebrated their last home dual at their gymnasium hosting the #2 ranked Bearcats from Kearney High School. On a night celebrating the past Discoverer State Champions the Bearcats ended up on top of the Columbus wrestlers 47-20.
In the opening round of the Midwest Duals, Kearney High School defeated Lincoln Pius 72-6 to reach 500 dual wins in school history. Against Pius, Trey Grube avenged a loss against second ranked wrestler in his weight class by technical fall. This dual was followed by wins over Cheyenne Central 64-6, and Columbus Scotus 57-18.
In their only home dual of the season, Kearney High School put on a show for a packed student section wearing singlets. The atmosphere was electric as the Bearcats competed side by side with the Loper wrestling team as they battled Lindenwood University. Kearney only lost two matches and outscored North Platte 66-6.
The JV Gold Bearcats take home the top spot and sweep the tournament with 230 team points while the JV Blue team wrapped up eighth place with 94 team points in the 17 team field invite. The Bearcats placed 18 wrestlers between the Gold and the Blue team with two champions.
Kearney High had 6 champions at the Gator Invitational to claim the team championship for the third year in a row. The Bearcats placed 13 of 14 wrestlers in the top 4 to accumulate 258.5 points. Kearney had seven junior varsity wrestlers entered in the tournament, 4 of which placed in the top 4 as well.
