The Kearney High wrestling team claimed the A-4 District Championship out scoring a tough Creighton Prep team 195 to 158.5. This marks the second A-4 District Championship for the Bearcats in as many years. Kearney will send 10 wrestlers to the 2012-2013 Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament. The Bearcats finished the day with six district champions, two runner-ups, and two third place finishers.

Gabe Crocker wrestled his way to the 106 pound championship final match. Crocker came up short in his finals match up against Thomas Cahill of Papillion-LaVista by a score of 7-1. Isaac Stansbury dominated the 113 pound weight class and pinned his way through the tournament. Hunter Bamford followed suit by pinning all his opponents in route to the championship at 126lbs. Austin Marshall claimed victory at 132lbs by defeating defending State Champion Hayden Hanson of Creighton Prep in the title match. Mason Merritt punched his ticket to the State Tournament by wrestling to a third place finish at 138lbs. Derek Beruman brought home his first championship of the year by defeating Daniel Kumm of Norfolk 7-2 in the finals. Kalen Mazankowski continued his undefeated season in route to the 152 pound championship. Mazankowski defeated Preston Kelly of Papillion – LaVista in the final match-up by 11-2 major decision. James Chamberlain wrestled from the 7th seed to place 3rd for the Bearcats at 160lbs. Chamberlain defeated Kyle Plambeck of Bellevue West in the consolation finals. Trey Schlender came up short in a hard fought finals match-up against Jake Anderson of Creighton Prep by a 3-1 decision. Quinton Ross staked claim to the 6th individual District Championship for the Bearcats by defeating Cameron Dickie from Norfolk. Ross defeated all his opponents by fall.

The Bearcats will take 10 wrestlers to the State Wrestling Tournament on February 14th. The District Championship also automatically qualifies Kearney High School for the State Dual Championship on February 23rd.
