Kearney High Bearcats Wrestling

The Bearcats opened up the 2020 season at home this past weekend. With the unknown during the Coronavirus pandemic, wrestling has resumed, fortunately. The Bearcats competed all JV and reserve wrestlers with 14 wrestlers receiving medals.

The team competed well in the first tournament of the season. Seth Phillipi (106), Andrew Dahlke(138) and Adrian Martinez (132) all placed first. Dahlke took the reserve wrestler of the week honors home wrestling very well on Saturday. Dahlke went 3-0 on the day pinning all three of his opponents. Kearney had several JV wrestlers take the runner up spot as well. Dominic Molina (106), Vincent Petersen (120), Trevor Baird(126) Riley Todd(138), McKaden Smith(160), Kaden Host(220), Gil Ramirez(126), Tate Choplin(138), Joe Paysen(152), Cisco Rivas(138), and Brandon Moore(285) all placed second.

“The first tournament of the year is always an interesting one. On one hand, you have guys just chomping on the bit to get out there and compete and then on the other hand you have the complete opposite. Your guys that are new to wrestling have the deer in the headlights look. We always have guys that get shell-shocked but I love the fact that they are out there competing. It is a learning process. We have such a great group of kids from top to bottom and I am looking forward to the way the rest of this crazy season is going to play out.”-Coach Clark

As of right now, the Bearcats are open next week with additional tournaments trying to be planned to fill in the gaps of this year’s schedule. The next planned competition is for the JV 1 Bearcats at Axtell on December 15th.
